Ticker Review: New Avengers Annual #1

The saying goes 'never judge a book by it's cover'; in the case of this comic it could be 'never judge a book by it's title'. While the cover says New Avengers Annual #1 it should have been solicited as Best Doctor Strange in Years #1.

The story is by Frank Barberie- his first Marvel work though previously I've enjoyed his The Blackout and White Suits. Here he takes us back and forth between Strange's younger years as a surgeon and the present. There is a true progression of the character on the page.

Probably the most talked about aspect of the book will be the beautiful artwork by Marco Rudy, most recently of Marvel Knights Spider-Man. Comparisons to J.H. Williams will run rampant and rightfully so. Experimental layouts, exciting mixed-media presentations and just plain daringness in execution.  Rudy brings Strange and the astral plane to life in a way that seems new and establishes a new standard for the future.

With a movie coming in the next few years I expect that Doctor Strange's profile at Marvel to be increasing and this book does it big-time. As I said the best in years.
