Does Marvel pirate scan their own comics?

In a lengthy post on 4thletter!, Comics Alliance contributors David Uzumeri and David Brothers go through a their investigation of Marvel's pirated scans and how they were able to discover the source of those scans. And that was a leak at Marvel itself.
Having determined the typical paramaters of scanned comics -- resolution, file size, indica, fonts and overall quality -- Brothers and Uzumeri observed that the Marvel titles labeled "digital scans" were of a markedly different fidelity than those of DC and other publishers. The Marvel scans employ a uniform standard seemingly sized and formatted specifically for reading, and the same differences eliminate screenshots of comiXology products or rips from its Web reader.
The duo quickly eliminated several possible sources, like the pdf files sent out to comic news sites for reviews or previews. However the biggest clue in the investigation was found in the comparison of the digital pirated scans to the printed comics. They singled out a specific issue, Uncanny X-Men #7, and how the pirated scans were missing a layer of digital artwork, in this case musical notes that were to be part of the lettering. That led them to the idea that the pirated scans were coming from Marvel's own pre-press files.

Following the conclusion of their research into the origins of the scans the information was forwarded to Marvel with all the details of the leaks. Marvel has since closed the access that was used to get copies of its digital files.
