Whedon Answers the Spider-Man in Avengers rumors

Well it was a sad day for many a Spidey fan today. During Marvel Studios' Twitter Q/A for 'The Avengers' writer/director Joss Whedon put an end to all the discussion after being directly asked by a fan-
JW: "There is no Spider-Man cameo. But the Avengers do turn off the dark."
While the rumor seemed to run contrary to movie industry practice it was certainly believable enough for the wishful  thinking of many fans of both the highly anticipated 'The Avengers' and Sony's reboot of the Spider franchise with this summer's 'Amazing Spider-Man'.

Confirmed! Captain America 2 to film late this year and then Nick Fury?!

In an interview with IMDB.com about his TV series Justified, actor Neal McDonough confirmed for fans what many have been hoping for since last summer's release of Captain America: First Avenger: that there will indeed be a sequel. And McDonough seems quite excited to be reprising his role of 'Dum Dum' Dugan from that film in the sequel and beyond.
Yeah, they’re planning (to go into production for) Captain America 2 for the end of this year, because Marvel does one film at a time. So they’re going to do Thor 2 and as soon as Thor has wrapped, they’ll do Cap 2. Hopefully right after that, we’ll jump into Nick Fury because that’s the one I’m looking forward to more than anything.
Because it’ll be me and Sam Jackson. In the real Marvel universe, Dum Dum Dugan is Nick Fury’s right hand man.
Nick Fury? There has been many rumors swirling around for years that eventually Marvel Studios would get around to doing a Nick Fury and SHIELD movie. So in one interview we get two fantastic film confirmations.

Generation Hope canceled with #17

Series writer James Asmus has confirmed that Generation Hope will be ending with issue #17 as has been speculated by fans. From his recent interview with Comic Book Resources:
Yes, the book is ending with issue #17.  I will say (as I did a month ago) that these were the five issues I planned from the beginning.  You can read all the old interviews where I promised to get to the betrayal, and I knew I had to do it before “Avengers vs. X-Men.”  The book was already under 20K copies when I took over, so while I figured there was a chance to tie into “AvX,” the way the market and the event developed, a “Generation Hope” tie-in doesn’t make sense… When Marvel first asked me to hop on the book last summer, I was told that they wanted me to take the book up to “AvX”.  Sales were already below the 20K copy mark, so there was the expectation that unless a market-miracle happened, the book probably wouldn’t keep going after the first five issues.

Will Spider-Man be in The Avengers?

A recent interview by British actress Jenny Agutter has set the internet on fire. She had previously been announced as having an un-named role in Marvel Studios' The Avengers movie. While full details of her time on the set aren't given nor or plot details shared, she does talk of the production and the trailers of the stars of the film, including, it seems, of Spider-Man.
"I'm sworn to secrecy! I wasn't allowed a script until I got there, and when I did I felt like a complete child being on big sets and a huge parking lot full of Winnebagos."

She does let slip that two of these housed Spider-Man and Iron Man; we suspect Agutter won't able to avoid sci-fi conventions for much longer.

Justice League #5 PREVIEW

Courtesy of DC Entertainment

Justice League #5 by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee is on sale January 25, 2012.

DC debuts new logo and branding

Courtesy of DC Entertainment:

BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2012 – DC Entertainment, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company and home to iconic brands DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD, revealed today a new brand identity.  The new identity is reflective of the company’s mission to fully realize the value of a rich portfolio of brands, stories and characters, distinguished by incredible breadth and depth across publishing, media and merchandise.  A new logo for DC Comics was also introduced, closely aligning with DC Entertainment’s new mark.

“It’s a new era at DC Entertainment and the new look reflects a dynamic, bold approach while at the same time celebrates the company’s rich heritage and robust portfolio of characters,” stated John Rood, EVP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development for DC Entertainment. “It was just a few months ago that Superman, Batman and many of our other Super Heroes were updated when we launched DC Comics – The New 52 and now it’s time to do the same for the company’s identity while remaining true to the power of storytelling which is still at the heart of DC Entertainment.”

DC Entertainment worked with Landor Associates, one of the world’s leading brand consulting and design firms, to develop an identity that creates a visual connection among the company, its three brands DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD and its vast array of properties as well as celebrates the power of the company’s stories and characters.  The design of the new DC Entertainment identity uses a “peel” effect – the D is strategically placed over the C with the upper right-hand portion of the D peeling back to unveil the hidden C – symbolizing the duality of the iconic characters that are present within DC Entertainment’s portfolio.

“It was our goal to capture DC Entertainment in a dynamic and provocative identity.  Our solution is a living expression which changes and adapts to the characters, story lines and the ways fans are consuming content,” explains Nicolas Aparicio, Executive Creative Director at Landor’s San Francisco office.  “The new identity is built for the digital age, and can easily be animated and customized to take full advantage of the interactivity offered across all media platforms.”

The new brand identity will come to life across all consumer touch points in order to create a clear and consistent message in support of DC Entertainment.  The new identity will begin to appear on comic books and graphic novels as well as new websites in March.  Consumers will also see the new identity rolled out over time on other DC Entertainment products from Warner Bros. including film, television, interactive games and merchandise.
“We believe our new brand identity will strongly resonate with our loyal fans who will want to proudly express their affinity for DC Entertainment and their passion for their favorite stories and characters, this new look allows them to easily do this. In addition we were excited to update our identity, it’s not often a company gets to revisit something as important as its brand and we took the opportunity to make sure it represented the multi-media business we set out to build with the formation of DC Entertainment,” said Amit Desai, SVP of Franchise Management for DC Entertainment.

Ticker Review: Action Comics #5

To start, I'm not a fan of retelling the Superman origin yet again- and I might not be alone judging by the cover. But this one had some great art by Andy Kubert. Grant Morrison, for as much as he defined the classic Superman story with his All Star Superman series, seems to have yet to nail his approach to this version of the character. The 'surprise' reveal at the end of the main story did intrigue me enough to continue trying out this series with the next issue.

New image of Captain America from The Avengers movie

Earlier today Entertainment Weekly posted an interview with Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon. Among the  tidbits of new information that was able to be gleaned from that interview, was that Whedon is using the character of Captain America as the focus of the group.
“So much of [The Avengers] story takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird-ass world,” Whedon says. “Everyone else has been living in it. He’s the guy that feels that sense of loss.”
“[The Avengers] is very much about people who are alone — because I’m writing it,” jokes Whedon, who has assembled groups of outcasts before in TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer andFirefly — but also, remember, in his script for the original Toy Story. “[Captain America] is kind of the ultimate loner in that way. There is an anachronism to him, and Chris and I have always tried to, without making it goofy or too obvious, make him that same grounded ’40s Steve Rogers he was in the other movie.”

Adi Granov does Avengers for Marvel

A few days ago Granov posted this image on his Facebook account. While he did not go into any detail as to what the picture was going to be used for it isn't too hard to guess. The picture has the movie version of the Avengers so this will obviously be used in a tie-in to the upcoming summer blockbuster. When more information becomes available I'll update.

Batman and Detective Comics going to $3.99 in 2012

Earlier today Newsarama posted an in depth interview with DC executive John Rood and Bob Wayne in which the pair discuss many aspects of DC's publishing plan for 2012 and how markets shares and dollar sales figures supposedly are not the driving force at the company.

Among the many hints at changes to the publishing line was the unofficial announcement that both Batman and Detective Comics were being 'bumped up' to $3.99 and 40 pages from the DC standard format of $2.99/32 pages.

As to the reason for the books increase in price and pages Rood did say that it was based on the fact those two are having the strongest sales of DC's $2.99 titles and also because of some forthcoming story point.

For more details from that interview follow the link here.

DC gives us a first look at Superman: Earth One vol. 2

DC Comics has released some pages from the follow-up volume of J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis' Superman: Earth One. The second volume will be released in May. According to JMS:
“We couldn’t just rest on our laurels. (And does anyone actually rest on laurels? Are there gatherings of laurel-resters? If so, why haven’t I been invited? These are the questions that keep me up at night while the rest of the world dreams.) Thematically, if Volume One was about Clark figuring out where he belongs, then Volume Two is about Superman trying to figure out where he belongs in all this, even as the world does the same at their end. How far can he push his power before he becomes something other than what he intended to become? In the midst of all this Clark gets his first apartment, becoming entangled with a beautiful woman next door, Lois starts trying to figure out what it is about Clark that doesn’t add up, and a new and terrifyingly strong version of the Parasite is born from what was previously a serial killer…and now Superman has to confront someone who is not only as strong as he is, but can drain his power completely. In the aftermath of one of the massive battles that threatens to tear apart Metropolis, Clark for the first time feels what it’s like to be normal, to be mortal, to be vulnerable…to be us. In the end, Volume Two is about power: its use and abuse, and its place in the world, to be used for good or for evil.”

Just beautiful Batman: Death By Design artwork

DC Comics has released some stunning artwork from the highly anticipated original graphic novel Batman: Death By Design, written by Chip Kidd and with art by Dave Taylor. They have crafted a story that captures the flavor of the city as it’s never been seen, and at the same time creating a new look at Batman that re-imagines both the caped crusader and his iconic nemesis – the Joker.

From Kidd:
“When my editor Mark Chiarello told me that was not the case, I jumped at the chance to include him. This page marks his grand entrance into the book. I wanted him to look like a 1920s silent movie villain, as his visual roots lie in Conrad Veidt in ‘The Man Who Laughs.’ Dave totally nailed him in a unique yet undeniably classic way, and I LOVE what he’s wearing: the jodhpurs, the dinner jacket, and those boots!! To die for, so to speak. That is all due to Mr. Taylor’s expertise, which shines throughout the book. If you think this is cool (and it is), just wait…this only the thin end of the wedge!”
From Taylor:
“Chip’s writing, his total knowledge of the character and his environment, has made this a very special story. It’s full of what I call Batman reality. The tone and feel of this book are as close as anything I’ve read to a real sense of being. Gotham exists. The Batman is real. All these people are as real as you and I. And the story then is real also. The amount of research I did on it’s own shows that I was into something way bigger than I’d first thought. I now know more about 1939 than I do about the year of my birth! The book contains some of the truth behind how a city is built, literally. The corruption, and misplacement of power rings true to the point of making this book a timely record. But what this book does above all is show how easy it can be to bring that corruption and power down, all you need is one hero!”

BATMAN: DEATH BY DESIGN will be released on May 2, but we have a first look at Taylor’s interior art for the book – as well as the design process that led to the final product.

Lex Luthor- the sexiest man alive?

Really? Is it possible? Well that's the rumor coming from CosmicBookNews.com. According to the site actor Bradley Cooper -of The Hangover, Limitless, A-Team etc.- will be joining the production of Superman: Man of Steel to film a cameo as Lex Luthor.

They go on to state that in an early draft of the script for the movie Luthor played a prominent role in the film. However in director Zack Snyder's attempt to separate the movie from the Donner movies and Bryan Singer's Superman film of a few years ago that script was reworked and the character all but dropped.

No confirmation so far but with a release date of summer 2013 and the part only being a cameo Cooper could film this at anytime throughout this year and close to the release date. That would be very similar to how Marvel Studio's had the Jeremy Renner Hawkeye scene added to the Thor film at the last possible second.
